NXT heads back to New York for Takeover once again. This time to kick off Wrestlemania weekend. The card is stuffed with marquee matches such as the NXT North American Champion Velveteen Dream defending his title against “The Original Bro” Matt Riddle and the Fatal 4-way for Shayna Baszler’s NXT Women’s Championship. What superstars will leave Takeover New York with some gold and who’ll be leaving with pain and disappointment?
Velveteen Dream (c) vs Matt Riddle – NXT North American Championship
After winning the World’s Collide Tournament, Velveteen Dream set his sights on the North American Champion Johnny Gargano. After being successful in his bout against Gargano. A number of weeks later Matt Riddle came out on NXT wanting “a closer look” at Dream’s North American Championship. A couple of weeks later both men were involved in the fatal 5-way match to determine who will face Johnny Gargano for the vacant NXT Championship. Both men came up short but NXT GM William Regal saw the performance the two men put in and decided to have them face off at Takeover New York. Can Velveteen retain his title or will Matt Riddle make it be Dreamover for the Dream?
Prediction: Velveteen dream and Matt Riddle put one hell of a match but Riddle wins via the Bromission.
War Raiders (c) vs Ricochet & Alister Black – NXT Tag Team Championship
Ever since teaming up Alister Black & Ricochet have had a nice amount of success, including winning the 2019 Dusty Rhodes Classic. On the main roster, they’ve beaten just about every tag team but have failed to capture any gold despite both men holding singles gold in NXT.
Hanson and Rowe have been looking forward to challenger ever since they beat Undisputed Era’s Kyle O’Reilly & Roderick Strong back at Takeover Phoenix. Can Black & Ricochet defeat the War Raiders or will Hanson & Rowe pillage the former NXT & North American Champions?
Prediction: Black and Ricochet are one of the hottest teams in the WWE so I can see them winning the tag titles.
Pete Dunne (c) vs Walter – WWE United Kingdom Championship
The longest reigning champion in WWE’s modern era has been on a tear since beating his British Strong Style stablemate Tyler Bate at Takeover Chicago to become only the 2nd UK champion. Throughout his historic run, he’s beaten the likes of Adam Cole, Johnny Gargano, Zack Gibson, Joe Coffey, and others. Now he faces his toughest challenge to date, a man who I consider the Darth Vader of wrestling, Walter.
Walter made his NXT UK debut after Dunne retained his title against Joe Coffey at NXT UK Takeover: Blackpool. He came to have a stare down with Dunne, teasing a future match. Can Dunne pull off a miracle and extend his title reign or will Walter chop Dunne’s chest to the Shadow Realm?
Prediction: If I did this earlier in the week I would’ve gone with Walter but after some thinking, I can see Dunne sneaking away with the victory. His title reign is closing in on 2 years so I can see creative making him retain until then.
Shayna Baszler (c) vs Io Shirai vs Bianca Belair vs Kairi Same – NXT Women’s Championship
The queen of Spades goes into Takeover New York with quite the challenge ahead of her. She must defend her title in a fatal 4-way match against Io Shirai, Bianca Belair, and the previous NXT Women’s champion Kairi Sane. After having nearly lost her title to Bianca Belair at Takeover Phoenix and losing it to Kairi Same at Takeover Brooklyn 4 can the Queen of Spades Retain or will a new champion emerge.
Prediction: The way I see it this will go two ways either A) Io Shirai wins the title by pinning Sane or Belair. Or B) Some problems between Kairi & Io lead to an opening for Shayna to win. Either way, I sense a heel turn for Kairi.
Johnny Gargano vs Adam Cole – NXT Championship
With Tomasso Ciampa having to vacate the NXT Championship due to a neck injury Triple H decided to set up a new match. Originally Tomasso Ciampa was supposed to face longtime Johnny Gargano but with this injury, plans had to change. As a result Triple H set up a fatal 5-way match between Adam Cole, Alister Black, Ricochet, Matt Riddle, & the NXT North American Champion, Velveteen Dream. The men fought hard with Adam Cole coming out victorious.
This victory has set the stage for the leader of the Undisputed Era to face Johnny Takeover. Whoever wins this match will the first Triple Crown Champion in NXT history.
Prediction: Adam Cole Bay-Bay. It just isn’t right for Johnny to win the big one if it isn’t against Tomasso Ciampa
